Malayalam Movie Review - Premam (Rating 3.75/5 Star)

Premam is the biggest Movie of the year (and maybe ever at this rate)!!!

Summary:

After, Thattathin Marayathu, this is the first time I have seen such a buss around a movie. All that "buss" is being turned into huge collections at the box office, as the two weeks collection is reportedly over 20 crores (Roughly $3.2 Million). To put that in perspective, Oru Vadakkan Selfie, considered to be the best of 2015 until Premam) did around 17 crore in 41 days.

Enough accounting...

Premam is brought to us by the same team that created the 2013 hit movie Neram. A review of this movie has never made it onto MalayalamFilmBlog, but not because the movie was not good. Just timing. If you have not seen, Neram, I certainly recommend you do so. If you did, you will recognize many of the same faces in Premam,. Many of the same artists/crew also worked behind the camera including the director, Alphonse Putharen.

Premam does not follow the "Normal" Three-act structure followed by a typical Malayalam movie. While I am all for moving away from the straight and narrow to a more original approach, Premem seemed a little too much like a bunch of scenes strung together than a movie. All in all it was somewhat of a disappointment for me.  Partially because I bought into the hype surrounding the film.

The move started off promising, and I thoroughly enjoyed how it unfolded so beautifully, in a way that a Malayali can easily relate. But from there it just went onto be repetition of similar scenes/scenarios compiled over a period of time with good comedy and music (maybe a few too many songs). All three of the block of Scenes are done very well and I was entertained, but the combination did not satisfy my idea of a "Movie" I guess. Towards the second half of the second block, I got the feeling that things were just dragging.

The cast is excellent, the three core friends of Nivin Pauly as George David , Shabareesh Varma as Shambu, and Krishnasankar as Koya was excellent. Beyond the three friends, many many supporting roles are brought in through out the movie, and none seemed as if it was forced.

Notable supporting roles: Vinay Forrt and Soubin Sahir as his side kick PT Master, Renji Panikkar, Wilson Joseph and the list keeps on going.

Ofcourse there is no Premam without the ladies.  The movie introduced three new actresses. Anupama Parameshwaran as Marry, Sai Pallavi as Malar, and Madonna Sebastian as Celina. All did very well and had the "Malayali Girl Next Door" feel.

All in all Premam was a visual treat, had a lot of nostalgic elements and was entertaining. Not sure if it was by accident or design but the hype machine was in full effect for this film and Congratulations to the team on that. It's certainly is worth the watch and I encourage everyone to do so. Just don't go in w/ the expectations created by the buzz (as I did :-)).
