Malayalam Movie Review - 1983 (Rating 3.5/5 Star)

Malayalam Movie 1983 Poster

 A feel good movie!!!

Summary:

Given how popular Cricket is in India and Kerala, it's surprising that there has not been many more movies surrounding it.  1983 is completely built around the game of Cricket from start to finish.  Not only is Cricket the underlying theme for every aspect of the film, the name 1983, is actually paying homage to India's first World Cup Victory.

Although Cricket is the general theme the story is built on, it is done in a way were someone who may not be a sport/cricket fan will also enjoy.  The backdrop for majority of the film is a a village with very little "modern" touches and it brings a level of reality and a likable feel to the characters.

The film goes through the various stages in Rameshan's life, played by Nivin Pauly, from Childhood to fatherhood.  All of it tied together by his love of Cricket and his friends.  The prototypical Nivin Pauly film so far has been on in which he plays the role of a Romantic Hero which often times did not seem challenging as an actor.  This one is different, and he proves that he can hold his own.

There really is no Heroin in the film and that's OK.  Manjula Sasidharan, played by Nikki Galrani is on screen for a good chunk of the film, but is not really a central character.  Joy Mathew, Anoop Menon and Srinda Ashab have a small but key role as Rameshan's father, sons Cricket Coach and Wife respectively.

1983 Gang/Friends:
Mantle Johny - Kalabhavan Prajod
Pappan played by Saiju Kurup
Prahaladan played by Neeraj Madhav
Babukuttan played by Sanju
Saji played by Dinesh
etc.

And a guest appearance by none other than Giri Giri, Jacob Gregory, playing the role of star cricket player "Sachin"!!!

All in all, good movie!!!
